Check out Pollença!
Local poet Costa i Llobera masterfully transmitted the beauty and classical resonance of “The Pine Tree of Formentor”, which is still revered at the Literary Conversations held since 1959 at the present-day Hotel Barceló Formentor. In a similar vein, the town’s commitment to the world of culture remains firm to this very day. Tales that are within your reach to listen to, feel, experience or share with whoever you may wish. Pollença, a place with stories to tell
Picture a place where verdant pine-clad mountains descend to meet an intensely turquoise sea. A town where stunning backdrops, a fascinating past and friendly locals are part of everything you do.
Imagine for a moment the authentic character of a dynamic town, with lively and creative people making Pollença a place with a full of content.
The town, with its old quarter, is the hub of social activities. Outlying resorts round off the destination: the Port, with excellent accommodation and tourist amenities, and Cala Sant Vicenç, with some of the best hotels on the island.
And, of course, the Formentor peninsula. Its famous hotel, its viewing point or its lighthouse have been sources of inspiration for politicians, artists and thinkers alike. Now you can discover them too.
Welcome to Pollença, a place with stories to tell.

Pont Romà
The origin of this stone bridge that crosses the Torrente de Sant Jordi is a mystery in the town of Pollença, because since the nineteenth century it has been called the Pont Romà (Roman Bridge), although its existence wasn't recorded until 1403, when it was known as 'Puente de Cubelles'.
Some people believe it was part of an aqueduct to the former town of Pollentia (now Alcùdia) built by the Romans, who were present in Mallorca between 123 BC and 425 AD. But the fact that the present-day town of Pollença wasn't recorded in its current location until the thirteenth century leads other historians to date the construction of this bridge to medieval times.
Roman or not, this bridge has been crucial for Pollença inhabitants, because until the nineteenth century it was the only safe way to cross the Torrente de Sant Jordi during high water. It is also clear that the Romans left an indelible mark on Pollença: its name.
(1) Quintus Caecilius Metellus: Military general from the Roman Republic who belonged to one of the most prominent families of the era and whose male members were all called Quintus Caecilius Metellus, later earning a nickname thanks to their military feats. Hence the Roman conqueror of the Balearics was known as Quintus Caecilius Metellus Balearicus, son of Quintus Caecilius Metellus Macedonicus (for his role in the Third Macedonian War that made Macedonia a Roman province).
(2) Vandals: Germanic tribe from central Europe first heard of in the second century BC on the southern shores of the Baltic, particularly in the area of present-day Germany and Poland, and notorious for the ferocity of their attacks. At the beginning of the fifth century, they crossed Gaul and arrived in Hispania in 409, where they settled as federates or allies of Rome. In 425 AD they pillaged the Balearic Islands, although the archipelago didn't become part of the Vandal kingdom until 455 AD. After years of victories, the kingdom fell into decline and was ultimately conquered by the Byzantine Empire in 533 AD.
(3) Conquest of Mallorca: Determined to conquer Mallorca and annex it to the Crown of Aragon (which back then included present-day Catalonia and Aragon), King Jaime I landed in the town of Santa Ponsa (southwest of Mallorca) in September 1229 with a 150-strong fleet of warships and the intention to expel the Moors from the island. After fierce fighting, he managed to take hold of the then capital Madina Mayurqa, now Palma de Mallorca, on 31st December, even though some Moors remained in Mallorca and stood strong in the Sierra de Tramuntana until the complete conquest of the island in 1332.
(4) Knights Templar: Knights Templar is the name given to members of the Poor Fellow Knights of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon, also called the Order of the Temple, one of the most famous Christian military orders of the Middle Ages. It was founded between 1115 and 1120 by French knights in order to protect the lives of Christians who made the pilgrimage to Jerusalem after its conquest. The growing power of the Templars, who wore distinctive white robes with a red cross, aroused strong suspicions and was precisely the reason behind the decree issued by Pope Clement V in 1312 to dissolve the order. Today, a veil of mystery still surrounds the Order's secret activities and ceremonies.
